BATTERSEA
IN COLOUR
Titled ‘Battersea In Colour’, the painting above represents the origin of my fascination with urban textures. I moved into my studio in Battersea on the 5th of August 2022. The move was met not long after by the reopening of the Battersea Power Station (October). The area seemingly burst into life and I wanted to be in the thick of it. Nothing more than a break for lunch, I began walking a route through Battersea Park and back around the Battersea Power Station before returning to work. The more I walked, the more ‘urban camouflage’ I began to find. From tiger stripes across Chelsea Bridge to sprinkler systems in the Battersea Power Station which resemble the compositions of Spitfire planes, It got a little overwhelming after a while. In a positive way.
The original painting incorporated the colours of various bits of inspiration that I had found around Battersea. However as I continued to improve technically as a painter whilst simultaneously finding more inspiration, I eventually decided that a series of individual pieces was the way to go. ‘Battersea In Colour’ is now an ongoing project which I’m currently working on with the super talented photographer, Daria Pyshna. Below is a selection of film photographs taken by Daria for the project along with the accompanying artworks.
